Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children

More than 13 million children have lost parents due to the AIDS pandemic sweeping across sub-Saharan Africa—a number expected to double in less than five years. And countless children are abandoned by parents too poor or too sick to feed or care for them.

Defenseless children exposed to the evil of the streets are subject to exploitation and both physical and sexual abuse. With no source of income they are forced to beg, steal—or worse. They are vulnerable to disease, hunger, and homelessness, and are too destitute to hope for an education that could break them out of their poverty.

Cross International Catholic Outreach partners with churches and ministries around the world—"angels" rescuing vulnerable children right in their own villages...

• Some ministry partners operate traditional orphanages where children are raised by loving "house mothers" and cared for in a group environment. Children who would otherwise go hungry and homeless receive food, shelter, and safety from the streets. Such facilities are especially critical for children with special needs.
• Many orphaned or vulnerable children have living relatives who are too poor to care for them. Ministry partners make it possible for them to live together as a family by providing the orphaned child with food, medical care, school supplies and other needs that the host family could not otherwise afford. 

• Teenagers often find themselves filling in for dying or deceased parents, but lack the resources to adequately care for their younger siblings. Ministry partners help these siblings remain together as a family by supplying food, shelter and other resources—including emotional and spiritual support—that their parents would otherwise provide.
