Cross Catholic Outreach’s “Team Joy” Preparing Christmas blessings for children in Haiti, Guatemala
More than 10,000 gift boxes prepped for nationwide
Box of Joy program

Wednesday, November 25, 2015. Miami, Florida —Cross Catholic Outreach has kicked off the operation of its Miami-based National Screening Center for the Box of Joy program to benefit the poor of Haiti and Guatemala. Between Black Friday and December 5th, dozens of youth and adults from the South Florida area will be donning their “TEAM JOY” t-shirts to prepare and process 10,000 Christmas gift boxes destined for needy children overseas.

“These gifts are Box of Joy donations that have been lovingly prepared by participants nationwide,” explained Jim Cavnar, president of Boca Raton-based Cross Catholic Outreach. “The boxes of toys and practical gifts are sent to Miami for processing prior to our shipping them on to Guatemala and Haiti.”

The new Box of Joy program launched by Cross Catholic Outreach is promoted through Catholic schools and parishes in the U.S. and implemented by Catholic partners overseas. However, anyone can participate, as evidenced by TEAM JOY’s diversity, which so far has included volunteers from the Coast Guard, Miami Dolphins Special Teams, as well as members of both Protestant and Catholic churches.

“Everyone is coming together for the benefit of these special kids, many of whom have never received a single gift in their life,” Cavnar said. “The Screening Center is hard work, lots of sweat, and a frenzy of activity that is mixed with smiles, laughter, team cheers, and new friendships being forged.”

The screening process takes place assembly-line style in a local warehouse (MIQ logistics) and follows the rhythms of upbeat tunes and traditional Christmas music. The TEAM JOY volunteers sort the gifts by age and gender, make sure all the gift items are safe and child appropriate, and prepare them for overseas shipment. It’s fun, sweat, love and holiday cheer all wrapped up in a great Christmas outreach that is happening Thanksgiving weekend and the week after. The Screening Center, the national hub where all the gifts from across the nation are processed, will be operating Black Friday noon to 9pm, Saturday from 8am to 9pm, every evening next week and 8am to 9pm on Saturday, December 5th.
